The days can feel very long when you’re a senior. With age, taking part in any physical activity can be especially difficult, which is why many seniors turn to the TV set for entertainment and to pass the time during those long days.
But, finding the right TV can be a tough nut to crack for many elderly folks who aren’t that up-to-date with the latest technologies and features (especially if you’re a visually impaired senior or are looking for a television for a relative with dementia).
Television sets have come a long way from the humble black and white tube fitted sets.Nowadays, TVs are fitted with the latest technologies, LED displays and are noticeably thinner. While the technology may have advanced, the one thing that seniors look for in a TV is the ease of use.
Keeping that in mind, here, we are going to shed some light on the best TV for seniors.
At a Glance: Best TV for Seniors
What to Look for in a TV for Seniors
Some of the factors that seniors need to consider when purchasing a TV is the size of the TV. Larger TVs will deliver larger, crisp, and clear pictures. The remote is another feature that needs to have fewer and larger buttons as compared to regular TV remotes.
Also, some smart TVs come with universal remotes, which allows you to control multiple smart home devices with a single remote or app. The cost is another factor that should be considered by seniors who are looking to purchase a TV. Big-name brands that offer TVs with more features and better picture quality tend to come with a higher price tag.
When it comes to looking for a TV for seniors, there are no universal answers. It comes down to considering the physical and mental limitations of the user. Fortunately, there are TVs available for every need.
Before you buy, consider:
- Picture quality
- Screen size
- Ease of use
- Streaming options
- Digital assistant pairing
- Remote design
- Voice control options
- Mirror screening
- Audio and visual tools

What’s the Difference Between a Regular TV and a TV for Seniors?
There aren’t many TVs designed specifically for use by senior citizens — when we talk about a TV for seniors, we mean one that has extra features that make it easier to use.
Depending on their unique needs, an elderly person might need more guidance on how to use a TV or more features to help them follow what’s going on in a show or movie.
Here are some of the common features of TVs that are well-suited to seniors:
- Larger, more obvious controls
- Voice control
- Larger screen or clearer picture
- Simple navigation and operation
- Extra accessories for users who are visually impaired or hard of hearing
Types of TVs for Seniors
So what kind of TVs are available that seniors could benefit from, and what features do they include?
TVs for Seniors with Dementia
There are many tools that can help people with dementia navigate their television more easily. These conditions often cause confusion and difficulty using tools and technology, such as remote controls.
TVs for seniors with dementia might include:
- Voice control
- Simplified remotes with large buttons
- Digital tuning – settings that allow users to navigate to frequently-accessed channels or services
- Programs or subscriptions designed for people with dementia, such as Memory Lane or My Life TV
TVs for the Visually Impaired
TVs for seniors who are visually impaired may have larger screens or ultra high definition pictures. Some TVs have audio description functions for people who struggle to see the screen.
TVs for the visually impaired might also include voice control or screen mirroring so users can select programs from a phone or tablet.
Smart TVs for Seniors
Smart TVs for seniors are no different than smart TVs for anyone else — they might just include some extra features to make them easier to use. Depending on the user’s needs, this could include features such as:
- Voice control
- Presets to more easily navigate or find favorite shows
- Audio aids and descriptions
Many smart TVs also pair with digital assistants such as Google Home or Alexa, which can be helpful for seniors who are already used to accessing these.
Basic/Non-Smart TVs for Seniors
Though it might not seem like it, traditional non-smart TVs are still around! Like most other models, though, they’ve gotten an upgrade, and you can find high-definition, LED flatscreen TVs of all kinds.
If a senior prefers to buy a basic cable package instead of streaming, there are traditional TVs available for them. Good choices for seniors might include features such as audio accessories, large screens, and simplified remotes.
TV Accessories for Seniors
TV Remotes for Seniors
TV remotes for seniors are often stripped-down versions of traditional remotes. They might have fewer buttons and a simplified design, with large, obvious labels.
These can be helpful for seniors with dementia who may be confused by new technology or seniors who only need to perform basic functions with their remote. You can find universal remotes that will pair with almost any television.
TV Hearing Devices for Seniors
If a senior has difficulty hearing, you may want to look into accessories that help them. This is a good alternative to them not being able to hear at all or turning up the volume until it causes hearing damage or disturbs neighbors!
There are many kinds of TV hearing devices, from sound amplifiers to personal streaming devices and more. Here are some of the top audio aids for seniors.
TV Headphones — TV headphones are usually wireless and are worn just like regular headphones. They pair remotely with the TV, allowing the user to turn the volume up as needed without disturbing others.
TV Earbuds — TV earbuds work the same as TV headphones. The difference comes down to the design and the way they are worn by the user.
TV Ears — TV Ears pair remotely with televisions to enhance sound. They may go up to 120 decibels. Different models may be worn like headphones or placed near the viewer.
TV Streamers to Hearing Aids — Some devices can pair via Bluetooth to a television and transmit the audio to the viewer’s hearing aid. This lets them experience amplified audio without turning the volume up too much.
TV Sound Amplifiers — A TV sound amplifier pairs with your television to provide clearer, louder sound as needed.
TV Speakers — TV speakers are similar to sound amplifiers in that they allow the user to customize audio levels to their needs, going beyond the normal capacity of the television.
TV Soundbars — A TV soundbar is a multifunctional, streamlined speaker system that helps amplify and cast sound, making it easier for users to hear no matter where they are in a room.
Conclusion
Now that we have gone through some of the best TVs for seniors, it’s time to pick the best option for you. While some might be looking for a large size TV for bigger pictures, others will look for ease-of-use, while others will look for both. While all of these are premium options, it is best to go with the TV that provides you with the features you need to get the best bang for your buck.

You’ve overlooked the most important issue most older people have is the inability to HEAR the TV set. Are there no tv’s with adequate speakers anymore?
One element that I am having trouble finding is what TVs support Bluetooth for hearing aide compatibility or other alternatives — Bluetooth adapter out of the headset port appears to be one, another would be if one has a sound bar, then perhaps Bluetooth from it could work, but I worry about audio and video sync problems.
No mention of sub titles. Which telly is best for that please?
This article was a total disappointment. If you check online posts and message boards you will find overwhelming numbers of people looking for simple tvs suitable foe elderly people with dementia. what most people in this category need are televisions with as few smart features as possible, no menus to scan through and remotes with basic up/down, on/off functions. the title really missed the mark. if you want to promote modern good tvs that is great but title it that way. Most seniors I’ve talked to care more about turning it on and changing the channel than the number of services it can support. ;(
I agree whole heartedly, am still looking for an old style tv that accepts cable and doesn’t have any other input features. Never fails, once my visit is over somehow my Dad gets off the regularly programming into other inputs and can’t get back to regular channels until I return. It’s so frustrating for both of us.
I agree as well. My mom would need one with minimal cables/wires (she thinks everything must be unplugged to be off) as well as being simple to use. I think this article is targeting the newly retired shopper will full cognitive range.
There are senior friendly remotes for sale on Amazon with power channel and volume only.
I completely agree. These are all Smart tv’s, and with dementia, all those outputs and extra features can easily lead to the tv going into a mode they can’t switch out of.
This article was not helpful in the slightest. I would suggest looking elsewhere, possibly, if you don’t need all those apps, for a “Dumb tv” – that’s what they call them – without all the bells and whistles.
We want a great picture but no extras..Just off/on, channel up/down. We are not techno savvy.
Seems that no tv’s at any pricepoint have decent audio
Same as the other replies….SO many of us are looking for tv’s for our parents with cognitive issues that are SIMPLE ! Volume and channel control and on and off. Every day we struggle with my dad messing up his TV – EVERY DAY. So frustrating for him and us !
We’ve heard you (and others), Cynthia! We’ll be updating this guide to focus on TVs that are simple and easy to use.
I agree with all the comments . Also Tv’s weighing 50-60 # are fine if you have someone to unpack them and set them up but no one does that, unless you have family around. My cable co. will charge $50 just to hook up the cables. No help programming either. I had to find someone that would come to the house to take my old tv to the recycle dump. This is not a piece of cake for the elderly. BJS
Attempting to help my dad get back to tv channels either in person or over the phone is excruciating. I’ve been trying to locate a simple tv, remote and cable set up that will not derail him. He gets so deep into the woods clicking buttons and then can not remember basic remote features, like “return”, “exit”, arrow keys etc. so it is mind bending trying to help him over the phone. I now have pictures of 2 of his remotes so I can at least say where to look on the remote for the appropriate button, but he rarely describes what he sees on the tv accurately, so hard to know how to Gide him. Thus, please help us find simple fail safe system…..
