Free Wheelchairs & Assistive Devices in Missouri

1. Accessibility Medical Equipment

Accessibility Medical wants to make accessibility affordable for everyone.  There are no requirements or qualifications necessary to purchase products and benefit from the affordable new and refurbished medical equipment.  As a non-profit, Accessibility Medical Equipment is supported by generous donations of medical equipment from individuals and organizations throughout the Kansas City metropolitan community.  In addition, they receive a grant from the Missouri Assistive Technology Advisory Council to support our equipment recycling and reuse program. 

2. empower: abilities

empower: abilities is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization with the mission to remove barriers and empower independent living for all people with disabilities. They have a home modification program. The types of modifications that empower: abilities provide include accessibility outside and inside a person’s home. Examples are:

  • Wheelchair Ramp or Wedge Ramp
  • Handrails
  • Grab Bars

They also offer something called walker steps. These are a shorter, wider step designed to accommodate a walker. The steps are 4″ in height and 20″ in width. 

empower: abilities is also a recycle center for Missouri Assistive Technology, so individuals can obtain DME like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, patient lifts, and bathroom safety.

3. Missouri Assistive Technology

Through a variety of services and support, MoAT increases access to assistive technologies for disabled Missourians. Where funding is concerned, they only directly offer low-interest loans. However, they can point you toward sources of disability grants for acquiring assistive technology, including a handicapped-accessible vehicle.

4. Mid East Area Agency on Aging

Installs grab bars in the shower and bathrooms via a donation. Must be part of the Family Caregivers Support. To qualify you must be 60 years or older and live in St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin or Jefferson County and have a 24-hour caregiver.

5. Paraquad

Paraquad empowers people with disabilities to increase their independence through choice and opportunity.

The Assistive Technology Reuse Program provides pre-owned durable medical equipment to people with disabilities at a low cost. Paraquad accepts donations of used equipment, assesses it for reuse, cleans it and makes any minor repairs necessary, and offers it for sale. Following are some of the examples of the equipment you can purchase from them:

  • Drive Medical Shower Chair (250-pound capacity) – $20
  • Drive Medical Padded Seat Transfer Bench with Commode Opening (250-pound capacity) – $60

  • Lumex Walker Tray – $8

6. Services for Independent Living

SIL provides information, demonstrations, and presentations on assistive technology as well as technical assistance for a variety of access needs. Access Services programs and services are available for individuals of all ages and disability types. Some of the services include The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Recycling Program, demonstration center, Telecommunications Assistance Program, Home Modifications, and Access.

7. St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church 

Local churches are a great place to find help with mobility aids and equipment. St. Andrew’s United Church has some walkers, wheelchairs, and other random medical equipment. As you have a need for them, please feel free to inquire about borrowing them from the church office. There is no requirement to borrow an item. Keep it as long as you need and return it when you no longer need it.

8. St. Louis Health Equipment Lending Program

St. Louis HELP is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They provide anyone in need access to free home medical equipment through recycling and reuse program, enabling people to live as independently as possible and remain contributing members of the community.

9. United Auto Workers Local 249

10. West-Central Independent Living Solutions

WILS works to empower people with disabilities to achieve and maintain their independence. They serve  Benton, Henry, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis and Saline County, Missouri. To achieve its mission, they have many programs such as Transportation Services Program, Ramp Construction Program, and Assistive Technology Program. Each program has different criteria that you need to fulfill to become eligible.
