Free Wheelchairs & Assistive Devices in Utah

1. Ability 1st Utah

Ability 1st Utah has an equipment loan bank for durable medical equipment. Most of the equipment has been donated to our center, which means that some of the equipment is gently used. Some of the devices are newly purchased from center resources.

These devices are available for loan to eligible consumers. For those unfamiliar with the concept of a loan bank, they offer the use of durable medical equipment (DME) to our consumers on a temporary basis, until permanent equipment can be accessed and placed with the consumer.

2. Active re-entry Independent living program

Active Re-Entry became incorporated as a 501c3 in 1987. They serve the seven counties of Eastern Utah – from Wyoming to the Arizona border – just over 27,000 square miles. The seven counties within the service district include – Dagget, Duchesne, Uintah, Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan. Active Re-Entry is a community-based program which assists individuals with disabilities to achieve or maintain self-sufficient, productive lives and lives independently within their communities.

The Assistive Technology & Equipment Loan Bank program is designed to facilitate consumers in obtaining necessary assistive technology. Services include evaluations by professionals specializing in assistive technology, funding information, research and problem solving and equipment loans.

3. Ability Found

Ability Found’s mission is to get people the equipment they need in the shortest time possible, giving them the greatest chance to achieve the freedom they desire. They review The Submitted Equipment Evaluation and Placement form for approval on a first come first serve basis without discrimination of any kind. If the request is approved, they submit payment to a registered medical equipment vendor within 3 business days of receipt of completed forms and invoice; also provides reasonable follow-up to ensure equipment is functioning effectively.

4. Project Embrace

Project Embrace collects, sanitize, and redistribute these devices to patients worldwide who otherwise have trouble accessing them. To request a device fill this form.

5. RRCI: Empowering People with Disabilities

RRCI’s mission is to empower people with disabilities in Southwestern Utah to live independently through education, personalized services, and technology. RRCI offers many independent living programs, which include an Assistive Technology and Loan Bank program. RRCI takes in donated equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers, and then loans them back out into the community at no cost.

Much like checking out a book at the library, any individual in need can go to RRCI and check out adaptive equipment to be used for a limited time. If the equipment is deemed to be needed longer, RRCI’s coordinators can help with finding more permanent solutions. One permanent solution would be using their Assistive Technology Program where RRCI can help find funding for equipment and devices for individuals with disabilities who qualify for the program to increase independence at home and in the community.

6. Redevelopment Agency of Provo City

Low-income individuals who are 60 years and older or who are on Social Security Disability and low-moderate income active-duty members of the military. Applicants must own and occupy home and live within Provo city limits.

7. Roads to Independence

At Roads to Independence, the process of getting an assistive technology starts with an individual assessment to determine the best type of equipment for each individual with disabilities. After that, they look to see if they have that particular item available in the Loan Bank. If they don’t have that equipment in the Loan Bank, they would look to find funding through an individual’s insurance, Critical Needs Housing funds, donations, grants, other loan programs.

8. Utah Area Agencies on Aging

Area Agencies on Aging are spread all across the united states and they assist the elderly in a variety of ways. Their services and support make independent living and continuing socialization more realistic for senior citizens.

Similarly, Utah Area Agency on Aging has many programs to look after its senior population. These programs include transportation as well as the Utah Caregiver Support Program. Transportation is available to various locations and for various needs including Dental Care, Medical Care, Medication Pick-Up, and Personal Business Needs – i.e., Social Security, Legal Services, Medicare.

9. Utah Assistive Technology Program

Utah Assistive Technology Program, as the name implies, is Utah’s assistive technology program through which disabled or senior people can get devices for demonstration purposes or as a loan.

Small grants may be available for families unable to pay the service fee if they meet income guidelines (150 percent of poverty) and have exhausted all other options. In addition, The Utah Assistive Technology Program offers UATP Classifieds, helping Utahns access the equipment they need, regardless of where they live in the state.

10. Utah Statewide Independent Living Council

    Hi. I am looking for a free wheelchair for my friend. She is 58 yrs old and is using a very old wheelchair. We are living at Switchpoint Homeless Shelter in St George, Utah and she struggles to push it and it breaks my heart. Is there anyway you can help?
