1. Abilities Foundation

The Abilities Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has helped thousands of Floridians and military veterans with all types of disabilities obtain mainstream jobs and affordable housing.

2. Agency for Persons with Disabilities 

The APD works in partnership with local communities and private providers to assist people who have developmental disabilities and their families. APD also provides assistance in identifying the needs of people with developmental disabilities for supports and services.

3. Bob’s Closet

Bob’s Closet is OxyPros Plus’ way of honouring the memory of Robert J. Councilman. OxyPros Plus accepts medical equipment no longer needed or being used from people in the community. Items such as nebulizers, CPAPs, wheelchairs, walkers, and oxygen tanks will be cleaned, refurbished, tested, and be available when those less fortunate have a need with no means to pay. At no cost to the patient, OxyPros Plus employees will deliver and instruct them on the proper usage of the equipment. 

They will also provide free follow-up instruction when needed.

4. Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation Health Equipment Lending Program

Founded in 1995, The Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. 

Last year with an annual operating budget of $2.5 million and over 65 employees, the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation provided 156,712 hours of adult daycare, 57,000 senior meals, transported seniors 156,000 miles and provided 13,885 hours of in-home respite.

The Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation Health Equipment Lending Program makes a wide variety of health and mobility equipment available to the community through free, no-time-limit loans of donated equipment.  These loans are provided at no charge to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those in need.

5. Centers for Independent Living 

Centers for Independent Living are spread all across the state and are a really good resource to find organizations that can help you with your needs. CILs empower persons with disabilities to take charge of their lives and guide their own destinies.

In addition, CIL staff, boards, and consumers work together to remove barriers and prejudices in society so that all individuals can live, work and enjoy all that their communities have to offer. At least fifty-one percent of the staff and boards of CILs are persons with disabilities.

6. Center for Independent Living of Broward

Center for Independent Living of Broward provides assistance to people with disabilities in fulfilling their goals of independence and self-sufficiency. They have a loan closet where they loan used durable medical equipment and consumer medical equipment in good condition at no charge.

7. CIL Jacksonville Temporary Loan Closet

Center for independent living Jacksonville is a charitable, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization serving the community since 1978. They empower all people with a disability to live independent, self-empowered lives. They strive to provide full opportunity for all through self-empowerment, self-determination and equal access.

The BROOKS Temporary Loan Closet (TLC), provides durable medical equipment for free to residents in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns Counties. The TLC includes a selection of wheelchairs (manual and electric), walkers, canes, crutches, shower equipment, and other items which are available to be loaned out on a temporary basis. Both short and long-term loans are available.

8. City of Jacksonville

The Disabled Services Division has partnered with the Jacksonville Job Corps to construct free wheelchair ramps for Duval County’s disabled population. The ramps are funded through parking citation revenue from citizens improperly parking in disabled spaces and they are helping local disabled persons obtain better access to their homes.

The Wheelchair Ramp Program is a service offered to low income families with a need for access to their residence and provides a wheelchair ramp at no cost to the customer.

9. Clinics Can Help 

Clinics Can Help (CCH) accepts gently used and new durable medical equipment (DME) and unwrapped medical supplies from individuals and organizations and makes it available to children and adults who may not otherwise be able to afford such equipment and supplies for their physical recovery. It is the only organization of its kind in Florida and one of the largest in the U.S. that provides this critical assistance. Fill this form to apply.

10. Disability Achievement Center

The Center has a Modular Ramp Program and as well as Medical Equipment Recycling Program. They have assisted hundreds of consumers to enhance their independence by obtaining equipment from our Medical Equipment Recycling Program, or MERP. Donations of equipment such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers and Hoyer lifts etc. are made to the Center which we, in turn, give to individuals who cannot afford to pay for these items. They also install modular aluminum ramps at no cost for eligible individuals for as long as they need them. The modular ramps are maintenance-free and are moved to another location once they are no longer needed. Disability Achievement Center learned that the recyclable aluminum ramps are more cost-effective than traditional wooden ramps because they can be installed in a few hours and the components can be used again and again.

12. Easterseals

Easterseals Equipment Loan Closet is a community resource of equipment intended to support individuals living with short or long term disabilities. Through this temporary loan program, adults, children and caregivers can live, work and play regardless of challenges.

All equipment is loaned at no charge.  However, Easterseals asks individuals to make a small donation to support the program. The equipment can be used as long as needed but should be returned when no longer needed so it can be loaned out to other clients.

Easterseals Equipment Loan Closet provides equipment such as 3-in-1 bedside commodes, Canes and crutches, Folding walkers (with or without wheels), Shower chairs and benches, Rollator walkers with seats, Wheelchairs, and most kinds of durable medical equipment.

13. Florida Department of Veteran Affairs

The United States VA offers funds and services on the state level. Florida’s VA is a key resource for state residents who serve or have served in a branch of the US military. Veterans with physical disabilities acquired or exacerbated during service can receive partial or complete payments toward a wheelchair van.

14. Florida Developmental Disabilities Council 

FDDC was created by a federal law mandating advocacy and assistance for people with developmental disabilities. It helps ensure independence, inclusion, and opportunity. Florida law includes autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, Prader-Willi syndrome, spina bifida and a high risk of onset of any of these conditions as developmental disabilities.

15. Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged

The Advantage Ride pilot program. The program was created by the Florida Legislature to test new ways to improve mobility services for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Since January 2019, the program has served 480 individuals and provided over 20,000 trips in Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas Counties.

16. Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology 

FAAST is a nonprofit reliant on funding from the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration and the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. It strives to increase access to services and technologies that improve life for Floridians with disabilities.

17. JT Townsend Foundation

JTTF is dedicated to providing hope to the community of people living with disabilities by offering financial assistance for adaptive equipment and services that will improve their quality of life.

18. Manatee County Loan Closet

The Manatee County Department of Public Safety, Community Paramedicine Lending Library makes a wide variety of health and mobility equipment available to the community through free, no-time-limit loans of donated equipment. The program also distributes donated adult incontinence products to those who need them. This program depends on donations of used equipment, which they then sanitize and repair these items can be given to those who need them.

The equipment they have available usually include Wheelchairs, Canes, Walkers, Crutches, Commodes, Medical Supplies, Urinary or bowel control products, Orthopedic boots and braces & more.

19. Millennium Angel Foundation 

The MAF is a Florida-based charitable organization that gives nationally but that has strong state ties. It provides funds to people catastrophically injured in accidents. If you lost mobility in an accident, apply for a grant from this nonprofit.

20. Pamoja Global Missions

Pamoja Global Missions organization participates in a Durable medical equipment reuse program. They recover, refurbish and redistribute previously owned medical equipment. The Pamoja DME reuse center program offers donated new or used, medical equipment and supplies to those who lack the resources to acquire new equipment at very low fees.

22. Seniors First, Inc.,

Seniors First accepts the donation of new and used medical equipment, refurbishing it to pass it forward to people (at little or no cost to the recipient) recommended to us by various social service and medical sources.

It is worth mentioning that the equipment is not free. However, those who cannot afford to purchase equipment from the retail market, but who can afford to pay something, could purchase the equipment at deeply discounted and reasonable prices from Seniors First.

23. Shriners Hospitals for Children International

Provides assistance with Durable Medical Equipment including wheelchairs. Inpatient and outpatient services for children with neuromuscular conditions, burn injuries and other specialized health care needs. Serves children in the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, and Mexico. 19 locations in the US.
