Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) is coordinated by the University of Kansas and activities are guided by an Advisory Council of technology users and state agency representatives. 

ATK strives to improve access to and acquisition of assistive technology (AT) for individuals with disabilities and health conditions of all ages.

ATK provides four core services:

The program has limited funding for equipment purchases and shipping. You can help ATK serve more people by picking up a device whenever possible or by making a contribution toward shipping and/or acquisition of new inventory.

Through ATK-KEE Reuse, eligible Kansans can get quality, refurbished durable medical equipment such as manual and power wheelchairs, patient lifts, electric and semi-electric hospital beds, shower chairs, communication devices and other health devices.

ATK accepts donations of durable medical equipment for ATK-KEE Reuse but other assistive technology devices can be donated to the ATK Reuse program. ATK partners with local and regional loan closets across the state to help Kansans with disabilities access a wide range of equipment.

The Kansas Telecommunications Access Program (KS TAP) is an equipment distribution program. The purpose of the program is to provide specialized telephones and other telecommunications devices to Kansans with disabilities who can’t use traditional home telephones. TAP gives specialized equipment free to those that qualify. Based on a state law, the program receives funds through the Kansas Universal Service Fund (KUSF) and is regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC).

    The Disability Certification section on page 3 of the Equipment Application needs to be completed by a licensed professional. The following professionals may complete this section for you depending on your disability: audiologist, ophthalmologist, optometrist, physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, speech pathologist, or vocational rehabilitation counselor.

    You can apply for new equipment every four years. You may reapply earlier if your disability or health condition changes and different equipment is necessary. A statement from your certifying professional is required documenting this change.

Since 1978, Independence, Inc. has served as a resource in Lawrence and Northeast Kansas through our mission to maximize the independence of people with disabilities through advocacy, peer support, training, transportation and community education.

The Equipment Loan Program provides loans and donations of recycled durable medical equipment at low or no cost to the public. Each item has a suggested donation amount, but no one is turned away because of lack of ability to pay.

Independent Living Resource Center operates the Medical Equipment Recycling Network (MERN).

The Solution Outreach Center at OCCK, Inc. is one of five Assistive Technology Access Sites in Kansas, which are part of the Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) Project.

PILR has durable medical equipment available to loan to people. Some available equipment may include toilet seat risers, walkers, wheelchairs, commodes, shower chairs, canes, video magnifiers, etc.

We also take donations of gently used equipment.
The equipment is loaned to individuals, for a small application fee*, and is available as long as there is a need. All equipment is not available at all times; please contact our offices for equipment availability. PILR also has limited personal hygiene items available in the Hutchinson Office.
