Program Description:

The Wayne Township Senior Citizen Advisory Committee serves at the discretion and direction of the Mayor to render services to seniors and to seek ways to assist senior citizens in their quality of life.

The Committee has served seniors for approximately 5 years, with membership open to all adults who are interested in assisting the community. New members are admitted upon approval of the Mayor.

Whenever a situation is presented to the Committee, we do our best to act on it as soon as possible. We know through Committee Surveys that many seniors are concerned about property taxes, traffic, and transportation here in our community. We have taken steps to bring these concerns to the attention of those in charge.

We have successfully advocated with the Parks and Recreation Department for the recent purchase of two new busses, one having accessibility for the handicap. We recently published an article in the newspapers outlining the requirements needed for having property taxes frozen for some of our seniors who meet the criteria.

We've worked with our Police Department is making every effort to solve some of the traffic problems throughout the Township, including the installation of speed bumps in heavily trafficked areas to help increase safety and reduce the speed of vehicles.

Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey is an interfaith nonprofit agency dedicated to providing free supportive services to the frail elderly and the home-bound, enabling them to live independently and with dignity in their own homes.

Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey provides service to many municipalities throughout Ocean and Monmouth Counties. All volunteers attend an orientation class and undergo a criminal background check before they are matched to provide a service.

We offer solutions to the homebound elderly, which allows them to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. We are funded through grants and donations from the families we assist and our generous community.

Currently there are over 1,200 volunteers assisting over 2,000 senior citizens in Ocean and Monmouth County.

These dedicated and giving volunteers are recruited from over 80 local congregations from all faiths that make up our Coalition; residents of Adult Retirement Communities and during educational presentations throughout the communities we serve.

Ocean County ranks number one in the state with the highest percentage of population in the 60+ age category.
Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey provides a safety net and a connection to the outside world for those seniors we serve.

Program Description:

The mission of the New Jersey Travel Independence Program (NJTIP) is to increase the independence and self-sufficiency of people with disabilities, older adults and others by empowering them to use the public transit system safely and independently.

In 2013 NJTIP merged with the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC), a national leader in transportation research and education and the nucleus of transportation-related policy research, training and education at Rutgers University’s Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.

Since 2005, NJTIP has worked with a variety of government agencies, community organizations and schools to teach travel skills to more than 10,000 individuals.

What is Travel Instruction?

Travel Instruction is a spectrum of services meant to teach safe independent travel skills on public transit: the bus, train, light rail, county and private systems. NJTIP customers learn how to read bus and train schedules; plan their trips; pay their fares; and take safety precautions.

After finishing training, our customers enjoy traveling on their own to go to work, school and medical appointments and to visit family and friends.
NJTIP Travel Instructors are seasoned professionals with experience in teaching, special education and assisting individuals with special needs.

  2. 2
The only cost to customers during training is paying their own fares. Each graduate receives a free one-month bus pass.
  3. 3
One-on-One services are available to customers who have applied to Access Link and live in Bergen, Camden, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Union Counties, except for those with visual impairments.
  4. 4
NJTIP Travel Instructors teach professionals and volunteers from social service agencies, schools, and senior residences how to become informed advocates for public transportation, so they can better assist their clients, students, and residents with navigating the public transportation network.
NJTIP has developed classroom curriculum for students in high school transition programs. NJTIP Travel Instructors teach weekly classes at each school and lead monthly field trips for practical experience.
  5. 5
They do not PROVIDE trips, they help people learn to use the services in their area, including NJ TRANSIT.
