Association for Blind Citizens

The Association of Blind Citizens operates the Assistive Technology Fund. The Assistive Technology Fund (ATF) will provide funds to cover 50% of the retail price of adaptive devices or software. The ABC board of directors believes that this program will allow blind and visually impaired individuals access to technology products that will have a significant impact on improving employment opportunities, increase the level of independence and enhance their overall quality of life.

The products covered by this program must retail for a minimum of $200 with a maximum retail price of $6,000. Persons eligible to apply for assistance must have a family income of less than $50,000 and cash assets of less than $20,000. Applications will be reviewed by the Assistive Technology Committee (ATC) and recommendations will be submitted for board approval. If applicants are selected to receive a technology grant, applicants will be asked to provide documents such as tax returns, bank statements and any other documents that the ABC board or its designee would deem necessary to assess the financial need for the grant.

Chrysler Automobility Program

Designed to help customers with permanent disabilities enter, exit and/or operate a new vehicle, the FCA US LLC DriveAbility Program can help you do the things you love to do in life. The goal is to assist in lessening the burden of the financial cost of modifying your vehicle.

FCA US LLC will give you a cash reimbursement of up to $1000 to reduce the cost of installing adaptive driver or passenger equipment on your new vehicle.

Ford Mobility Motoring Program

The goal of the Ford Accessibility Program is to make it easier for persons with disabilities to get on the road. That’s why they offer a wide variety of adaptable vehicles to meet different needs, budgets and personalities. To get things started, they are offering up to a $1,000 reimbursement on adaptive equipment, or up to $200 for alert hearing devices, lumbar support or running boards.

Goodwill Home Medical Equipment  

Goodwill Home Medical Equipment offers refurbished home medical equipment to individuals and families. They are the #1 place to donate unopened medical supplies in Philadelphia and South Jersey. National Disability Institute

NDI received funding for the program, which is one of 48 nationally, from the U.S. Department of Education. The loans range from $500 to $30,000 and are available to residents of New Jersey and New York. NDI buys down the interest rate, making it possible for approved loan applicants to obtain loans at four per cent interest, significant cost savings for borrowers. NDI also guarantees the loans, allowing for more favourable lending terms.

National Disability Institute takes calls regarding requests for the assistive technology loans. Referrals for the blending and braiding of funds are also provided which, in many cases, further reduces costs for those who need AT.

New Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving

New Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving, or JACC for short, is a non-Medicaid program. It provides a variety of care services and supports for elderly residents that require assistance with their activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, and dressing, and are, therefore, at risk of nursing home placement. Services are provided for program participants in their homes, in the homes of caregivers, or in adult daycare centres. Services are also provided for the primary caregivers of qualified participants in the form of respite care.

Participants and their caregivers can receive any of the following services/benefits:

– Adult daycare and adult day health care

– Chore services, such as yard work and light home maintenance

– Durable medical equipment and supplies (i.e., incontinent supplies)

– Home modifications to improve accessibility

– Meal delivery 

– Homemaker services, such as laundry and housecleaning

– Personal care

– Home health aide

– Personal emergency response service (PERS)

– Respite care to relieve the participant’s primary caregiver

New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired

CBVI offers blind and vision-impaired New Jersey residents assistance in acquiring assistive technology that is necessary to gain or retain employment. Assistive technology is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or system, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is commonly used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

New Jersey Division for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Since 1993, the Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH) has operated a program to ensure that New Jersey residents with hearing loss, regardless of their economic status, have access to telecommunications and visual alerting home safety equipment needed to live independently.

Individuals unable to afford the costs of assistive communication devices may apply to the “Equipment Distribution Program” for assistance. Upon meeting eligibility requirements, individuals may receive communication devices free of cost from the DDHH.

Portlight Strategies  

Portlight Strategies, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1997 to facilitate a variety of projects involving people with disabilities, including post-disaster relief work. They mainly focus on the access and functional needs of countless people who are disproportionately impacted by disasters due to inadequate planning, preparedness, and accessibility. Pluckemin Medical Equipment Ministry

Richard West Assistive Technology Advocacy Center 

The Richard West Assistive Technology Advocacy Center (ATAC) of Disability Rights New Jersey (DRNJ) serves as New Jersey’s federally funded assistive technology project through a sub-contract with New Jersey’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Its purpose is to assist individuals in overcoming barriers in the system and making assistive technology more accessible to individuals with disabilities throughout the state. NJCDD is the state chapter of the Federal Council on Developmental Disabilities, and it uses the federally ascribed definition of developmental disabilities. It is a leading source of information, grants and other forms of aid for people with any of these conditions or at a high risk of developing one.
